For sentient beings in this world, the ear-root is the most sensitive organ. However, we often wander following external sounds, bound by the dualism of noise and silence, forgetting our inherent nature of hearing. By reversing this outward search, we can enter the sea of perfect enlightenment.
Origin: The Root of Following Sound
Sentient beings are attached to sound, causing the pure consciousness to be stuck by the six dusts. The nature of hearing itself is unborn and undying; even in deep sleep, the capacity for awareness never truly vanishes.
Yet, we constantly pursue external stimuli, letting the mind shift with the environment. Recognizing this "inverted hearing" is the first step toward returning to one's true self.
Only by realizing that the nature of hearing persists beyond physical death can we understand its supremacy as a gateway to enlightenment. It is the most accessible path in this noisy world.
Method: The Practice of Entering the Stream
The key to this practice is "entering the stream and forgetting the object." This means no longer following external sounds but reflecting on the hearing nature itself, allowing the external sounds to dissolve naturally.
In specific practices like chanting, focus on listening to the "soundless sound" within. Every word must be heard clearly to unify the six senses and prevent wandering thoughts from arising.
As the practice deepens, the states of motion and stillness cease to arise. The subject who hears and the object being heard both vanish. When hearing itself is exhausted, one enters a profound state of meditative concentration.
Fruition: The Resonance of Manifest Stillness
When the arising and ceasing of thoughts are completely extinguished, the state of nirvanic stillness manifests. At this moment, the ten directions become luminous, aligning with the Buddhas above and the compassion for all beings below.
This transformation brings the virtue of the six senses interpenetrating, allowing the eyes to hear and ears to see. The mind and body are no longer trapped by worldly dust. May all practitioners reverse their hearing to find the ultimate perfection.

娑婆众生,耳根最利。然而我们常年循声流转,被世间的动静之相所束缚,忘失了本具的灵敏闻性。若能旋汝倒闻,便可直入圆觉之海。
缘起:循声流转的本末
众生因执着于声尘,使清净心识被六尘所黏。耳根之性本是不生不灭的,即便在睡眠中,那觉知的能力也从未真正消失。
然而,人们总是向外驰求,心随境转,导致闻性被妄念遮蔽。认清这种“倒闻”的根源,是开启返还自性之路的第一步。
只有意识到形销命谢而闻性不灭,才能明白耳根作为圆通常义的殊胜。它是我们在喧嚣世间最易入手的修行门径。
法门:入流亡所的对治
实修耳根圆通的关键在于“入流亡所”。这意味着不再随逐外在的声音,而是反观那能闻的自性,让外在的声尘自然消融。
在具体的持咒或念佛功课中,应集中心力倾听内心的“无声之声”。每一字、每一句都要听得分明,以此都摄六根,使妄念无处遁形。
随着功夫深入,动相与静相了然不生,能闻的主体与所闻的客体双双销落。当“闻所闻尽”时,便进入了深度的禅定境界。
落地:寂灭现前的余韵
当生灭的心念彻底熄灭,不生不灭的寂灭境界必然显现。此时十方圆明,不仅能上合诸佛妙心,亦能下同众生悲仰,获大自在。
这种转化将带来六根清净互用的妙德,使眼能听声,耳能见色,身心不再受困于尘劳。愿修学者皆能旋闻自性,证悟究竟圆满。
