When faced with disparagement, our usual response is defense or despair. But true freedom lies in recognizing the nature of the mind.
The Root of Ego
Suffering from criticism originates in the attachment to a solid self. We build an identity based on others views, and when it is challenged, our ego trembles. This pain is a mirror reflecting our hidden arrogance and attachment to the impermanent. Recognizing this distortion is the first step toward mental sovereignty.
The Path of Patience
A practitioner observes the reality: Buddha-nature neither increases with praise nor decreases with slander. Like gold in the mud, your essence remains untainted. By analyzing words as mere vibrations, we transform insults into opportunities for letting go. This equanimity represents the courageous spirit of a true practitioner.
The Fruit of Equanimity
As the mind expands to become like the void, small-minded remarks lose their power. Establishing an independent inner compass allows us to walk through the world with grace. We no longer rely on the worlds fluctuating opinions, finding eternal peace in the truth of equality and the realization of non-self.
